Pharmacognosy
The Department of Pharmacognosy is an integral part of the B.Pharmacy program that deals with the study of crude drugs obtained from natural sources such as plants, animals, and minerals. The department provides fundamental knowledge of medicinal plants, phytochemistry, herbal drug technology, and quality control of herbal medicines.
The department focuses on identification, collection, authentication, processing, and standardization of natural drugs along with extraction, isolation, and characterization of phytoconstituents. The laboratories are equipped to perform pharmacognostical evaluation, microscopy, phytochemical screening, and preparation of herbal formulations.
The department also promotes awareness about traditional systems of medicine and encourages research in herbal drug development and natural product-based therapeutics. Graduates are prepared for careers in herbal industries, phytopharmaceutical companies, quality control laboratories, research organizations, and higher education.
